HOW FIT DO I NEED TO BE?
There is a common misconception that you need to be at a certain level of fitness or strength to begin training Jiu Jitsu. In fact, Jiu Jitsu is accessible for all, regardless of fitness level or age, and each of us undertakes our own journey. Your fitness levels will increase as your training increases, no matter what point you're starting at.
HOW OLD DOES MY CHILD NEED TO BE TO START JIU JITSU?
Our kids' classes are a friendly and supportive way for your child to make a start in martial arts and begin to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Here at Gorilla Grappling Academy, we welcome children from 4 years and up. Don't hesitate to get in touch for more information!
AM I TOO OLD TO START BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that emphasises good technique over strength or brawn. With this in mind, any person can begin their Jiu Jitsu journey at any point in life. Here at Gorilla Grappling Academy, our members range from 4 years old to over 60 years old - we are each only competing against ourselves and who we were yesterday!
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO MY FIRST CLASS?
Beginners are always welcome at all of our classes. If you are considering trying out one of our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes, come along wearing sweat pants or joggers - we usually have a Gi for you to borrow for your first few sessions. When you decide Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is for you, we'll be happy to make recommendations as to where to buy a quality Gi. For our no-gi sessions, shorts and t-shirts will be perfect for most sessions.
DO I NEED TO HAVE PREVIOUS MARTIAL ARTS EXPERIENCE?
Previous martial arts experience is not essential at Gorilla Grappling Academy - in fact, most of our members have no martial arts background at all! Our classes are designed to allow for all ability levels to learn techniques and improve in Jiu Jitsu at their own pace, applying what it most relevant to them and their Jiu Jitsu journey at any point. Beginners are always welcome!
IT'S MY FIRST SESSION, WHICH CLASS IS BEST FOR ME?
Our Friday fundamentals classes are a perfect introduction to the martial art, focussing on building fitness, understanding correct movement patterns and learning technique, finishing with optional sparring. Our members are of a high skill level and always emphasise safety and control, perfect for any beginners! Of course, all of our sessions are taught in a friendly, supportive environment!
